Started at Erdington Technical College in 1985 in digs down Arthur Road at Mrs Brooks, had some crazy nights out with the lads especially Alan Wallbanks, Neil Caswell, Dave Clinton (Ironbridge) Simon Bird, Kevin Johnson, Darren Chapman, Neil Dryhurst, Pete Wood plus others. Then went to the CEGB welding school at Hams Hall for three years coming out as a coded welder. Following privatisation lost contact with a lot of lads and now only a few left in the industry. I am currently back at Central Workshops now known as Power Engineering Services as a NDT Supervisor on secondment from the Technology Centre. Had some great times and worked with the best bunch of people ever at Workshops it was like a family everyone looked out for each other, something sadly missing today.

Started as a Student Apprentice at Stourport Power Station but was sent straight to Derby to do 6 months Workshop Training with day release to Kedleston Rd College to start an ONC. Did a few months at Spondon Power Station whilst I finished my first year of the ONC. Then went back to Stourport to do the second year of my ONC day release at Worcester. Managed to get on a Degree course at Aston for a 4 year sandwich course spending my time at Ironbridge Power Station when not at Uni. After Uni went to Ironbridge in IMD for a while and then did a short time with National Grid at Stourport. Then in 1977 I moved to Wylfa in North Wales and have remained here ever since! Getting close to retirement now but still hanging on - but only do a couple of days a week! The CEGB apprenticeship provided a fantastic start to many careers, including mine, and left me with many happy memories.

Finished at Cottam as EMD fitter on shifts and became first shift foreman to cover all trades. Remember some names from my time at Burton, fist year:-Newark lot Karl Marshall, Bob ? Mark Copper Tomo. Notts Stewart ? Bob H plus lots more. Remember the night club in Burton Adams and the pubs. Second year was block course in EMD at Burton with the Birmingham lot. Left Cottam for oil industry in 1990 and left there to join Diamond in 1999 as Site Services Manager. Back at power stations on soot blowers . Still see met some old faces from my time as apprentice. Good times.

Started as apprentice mech. fitter at Penarth Training School and Llandaff Tech. Then later switched to Tech. Staff Trainee. My first post was asst control and later Control Eng. at Coventry. Moved to Surrey as Asst Charge at Kingston, then to Kent as Shift ops eng at Northfleet, I had a short spell seconded to Dungeness B, then Mech eng at Littlebrook D. That was when privatisation took place and I retired at 50, and moved to Italy to start a second marriage. I taught english for 15 years and retired again. Last month I returned to teaching (at the age of 77) as a favour to a local language school. Shift work was the best for me, great colleagues, satisfying work and plenty of time off (Seemingly!) The CEGB really did give you a good apprenticeship and opportunities in any field.

I started as a Student Trainee at Hams Hall on Monday 13th September 1965 with another Trainee Colin Palmer. Over the following five years rotated though various departments EMD, MMD, CCR, Planning and Operations within A, B and C. I remember P & P feasibility study for routine maintenance which came to the conclusion that only 15% could be effectively planned. During training I spent time at Drakelow A,B C; Nechells with Transmission; Ocker Hill and Reyrolle Newcastle. My first job Control Engineer at Ocker Hill 1970, then Hams Hall B 1972 before moving to Oldbury on Severn NPS in 1974. After a career on Operations ASCE, SCE and Head of Operations. Retired in 2006 remembering the best years and many friends. I remember telling Grid Control that I could not synchronise as per programme as a large Billy goat was loose in Hams Hall B Turbine Hall. Having breakfast in Hams Hall A Laggers emporium sitting on bales of asbestos. When gas turbine at Hams A station blew up the night staff wages were stolen from A & B offices. Various names stick in my mind. Superintendants, E.A.Birmingham (Ocker Hill), Tyas Howard ( Hams A,B&C), Jim Coaton Planning and TR. I learned an incredible amount whilst in CEGB Midlands Region.

A family friend has just made me aware of this site - there are some great images which bring back fantastic memories. I started in the same year as Mick Wilcox who I also went to school with! I did the usual Erdington stints always remenbering my first digs at Mrs. Farrells! I followed the mechanical apprentice route and passed out in 1985. As was the norm very few jobs were available and I transferred to Berkeley Power Station as a Health Physics Monitor. I moved to Hinkly Point in Somerset during 1991, changing jobs to a Plant Operator and then a Quality Systems Engineer. Following the closure of Hinkley Point 'A' in 2001 I transferred to the Oldbury Site as a Mechanical Systems Engineer where I have worked on the cooling plant and turbines. Oldbury shutdown 3 years ago and is currently defuelling. The next chapter maybe retirement - who knows! I have enjoyed a fantastic career and have no regrets at all!

Well what a graet website to see names from the past. I started as an apprentice at Rugeley A/B as there were no jobs when I came out of my time I managed to get a job as a health physics monitor at Berkeley Power Station 1986 which closed down in 1989. I then managed to get back on the tools at Heysham 2 Power Station for 5 years and then progressed into planning as 3rd engineer turbine side planning then progress as 2nd engineer Fuel Route outage planning and then moved to Somerset in 2006 as the Statutory outage co-ordinator and still here now. Would be good to see more names in the book.

Started as a student trainee at Nechells. I can remember the old “A" station control room controlling load with ships’ telegraphs and the workshop where all the machines were belt driven from one large motor in the corner. At Ratcliffe during its final phase of construction in 1969 in SMETS, Derby College for workshop training, manufacturers training at GEC Witton, Birmingham and Stourport transmission districts and finally at Warwick House Grid Control Centre, with a career at the control centre, Stourport Power station, Stourport Transmission District, Birmingham Transmision District, West Midlands Area, Midlands Area of National Grid, then back to the Control Centre. Retiring in 2008 from Network Operations Centre at Warwick. A privileged career in what now looking back was an exciting time with great people and18 different managers!

I recall all those listed in 1961 year who were on the pre-apprentice course at Handsworth Tech. I also remember a few not listed. There was a lad called Rickards, the same as our mentor, Colin Smart, a very tall lad who was also from Stourport Robert Alan Hartshorne and a lad called Bailey, John I think from Coventry. I relocated to Hams Hall C in 1985 when they closed the gates of Stourport and wouldn't let me back in. At this time I changed my surname to MacDonald to avoid police attention. At Hams I became reacquainted with Jim Aldridge, John Richards, who became a good friend, and Colin Smart. On the demise of Hams Hall C, it was with a very heavy heart and a wealth of very fond memories that I parted company with the CEGB whoops sorry Power something or other, 1992 I believe. I then worked for Fairey Nuclear, a company supplying BNFL with magnesium canisters for the fuel rods of the old Magnox Reactors. Then the electricity supply company's terminated the Magnox stations and I moved on to spend my last ten years working for a water treatment company from which I retired in 2013. Was looking at some LAC Minutes from Stourport 1963, makes you realise just how much employment as changed Feel very fortunate to have been part of CEGB.

Erdington Tech first year with Aston one day per week, it had just become part of Sutton Coldfield College. I was the Students Union Rep and always rubbed “Uncle Wal” (Wally Rickards) and colleagues (Messrs Watts? Wheeler? etc) up the wrong way. I was sent to RHQ at Haslucks Green Rd a couple of times for a “dressing down” and told that I was bound to fail! I got distinctions in most subject except G* Maths. Unfortunately Maths was Tuesday evening (Simms was the Teacher) and The Wolves played on Tuesday evenings! Stopped in digs and loved being in Brum, Saw James Brown live (first and best of four times) at Barbarella's one Saturday. Burton Tech College, followed by Drakelow PTC in the second year. I stopped in Nelly’s Digs in Stapenhill Rd and shared a room with Vince Mills (re-established contact a couple of years back by e-mail) in the next room Gaz Prichard (met him last year at a Network Rail event) and Jez? (he had a Morris Minor Van). Funny Story – John Kenwright (spoke to him on the phone last year –still CEng MIET) asked me to drive his Vauxhall Viva round from the front and put some rubbish from the boot and put it in a skip, the keys are in it he said! When I opened the boot there was nothing there. John Pinkham came out of IMD looking pretty angry to say the least – he had also left his keys in his (new style model) Viva! I did the rest of my training at Ironbridge and moved across to Bushbury (NW) Transmission, I had managed to get on the HNC course (Thanks Ron Thornton) and did a management course at Wolverhampton Poly so I was getting a bit frustrated on the tools – At least the lads spotted my talent and made me the Shop Steward (Probably the youngest in the CEGB). However when Drakelow wanted a Trainer with Transmission experience I was encouraged to apply and seven years after passing through as a Trainee, I returned as an Instructor. I was in the Royal Engineers TA by then, so probably seemed like a Sergeant Major (a tongue in cheek persona for me!). Spent a great couple of years with help from colleagues like, Allan, Robin, Terry & Bill + Gary & Jack the ops guys, the stores man Ken? (wheelchair bound) and the other departments. JK was good to me and Gordon Clapham also mentored me – thanks both! However after a couple of years an opportunity came up to be Head of the Electrical Department at Leeds Training Centre for North East Region, I was surprised to get the offer and couldn’t spurn it. At privatisation I was badged National Power. When Leeds closed I moved to Bricket Wood, but in the end after a spell with desks at Swindon, Didcot and virtually at Drax, I volunteered for redundancy. I became Company Training Manager for Haden Building Services then Haden Young, which was a great company founded by two ex Boulton & Watt Apprentices in 1816 and part of the BICC (later Balfour Beatty) Group. I enjoyed 12 successful years, followed by 9 months of ****, so I left and joined the IET usually to found in Stevenage, Savoy Place London or a theatre near you.

After two years stepped down to be a junior engineer with P and O cruises (good move)Left nine years (another good move)later as a senior engineer on the Canberra and after a short time moved to WA. after some other experimental career moves started offshore on FPSO,s (Floating Production and Storage Offtake Vessels)and am now Chief Engineer on Modec Venture 11 living in a beautiful spot near Brisbane. Readers from Spondon may remember my first Austin Healey 3000. I do still drive a 3000, but slightly slower (only slightly) Do remember the name Brian Stevenson from Spondon and wonder what happened to my friend Jim Morton of "Jimmy Moreton's youth club" fame- if you are reading this Jim. Fondly remember Brian McDowell training Engineer.

Dear Sir, I don't know if this is the right forum. I am a Power sector professional in India with more than 35 years of rich experience. With the ever increasing demand for quality power in this power starved country, more and more private IPPs are coming up. Hence there is a demand for O&M companies. As per prelim estimates, new power plants worth 80000-90000 MW are under different stages of construction. I would like to form an O&M company with technical and strategic tie up with a reputed company like CEGB. I will also tie up suitable financiers in India. Will you pl help me in this extremely challenging and profitable endeavor? Kind regards, DK SARDANA dksardana@gmail.com Mobile no. +91 9810401142.

Had some really good times during what I realised later was definitely a 'cut above' apprenticeship! Happy times that have stayed with me, enjoyed with Brendan Walsh, Kev Wheatley, Eddie Crouth, Brian Aldred, Will', Paul Chawner, Bun, and loads more at Erdington Tech, and the Burton training centre. Unfortunately, I was not really cut out for the daily grind and working conditions at Hams, so 'jumped ship' rather ungraciously straight away, into the Motor Industry and have, I suppose enjoyed a modicum of success (and very clean hands!) ever since. But, as said above, the CEGB really did treat and train me well. Anyone remember Brantwood ( Lake Coniston ) ?

Never seen a town with so many pubs.. the rest of my apprenticeship at Marnham on the job training. Spent the next 20 years as maintenance fitter, before moving to ops. and working my way up to the dizzy height of enhanced unit operator. Until 2003 When Powergen pulled the plug on us.. I fully agree with some of the other comments, had a great apprenticeship and enjoyable time working at High Marnham.

Greetings from the land of the long white cloud. Having started at Willington I was transferred to Drakelow in 67 where much of C station was still being re-engineered at D station. I stayed there for 27 years before taking voluntary redundancy and emigrating to New Zealand. I guess you could say I enjoyed it there, and why not. Looking back it was a great place to work, some great people, and a few strange ones, and, although we moaned about it at the time, a very good apprentice training scheme. Pity about the "Dash For Gas" and privatisation, as I see it, they ruined a good industry. Now working in the steel industry, and I thought Drakelow was hot and dirty. Interested to hear from any former colleagues.

Colin Turner (my father) died on the 19th February 2003 but completed 34 years service with the Board up until 1990. He worked as an Operations Supervisor at 'B', never at 'A'. He loved the job, knew the operation of the station intimately and took a pride in working for the Board. I always found my many visits to Meaford fascinating through childhood into adulthood and later when I became involved with its demolition in 1996. A bench and brass plate in his memory is to be found at the recently restored Stone Station (railway rather than power)!

One of the last 5 year craft Apprentices, I still run into lots of old faces - some worse than others. We did organise a bit of a reunion of the Instrument intake a few years ago. I left the board in 1970 and have roamed around the C&I industry ever since. I am currently selling C&I upgrades to the Coal Stations.

My Father Harry Fairbairn started his career in public service with NEEB in Carliol House Newcastle-upon-Tyne before my birth in 1960. With the CEGB he worked on The Stellas West Burton and was at Fiddlers Ferry before becoming Site Engineer at Hartlepool AGR. He then moved to Barnwood Nuclear D and C and was involved in the public enquiry on Sizewell B PWR. My father died in 1997. His time with 'The Board' and in particular at Hartlepool has left me with a profound sense of the value of service to the public via an organisation created for the public. Anyone recall him ?
