Sickness. It is pleasing to report the small incidence of sickness over the past month. Maurice WOODS, Louis LUCENT, George BARGH and Terry BARNES made up the list but all are now fit again. Unfortunately Jimmy THOMPSON remains sick and we wish him a speedy recovery. Welcome. To Messrs. G.A. ABBOTT and J.D. LAHMER, upon joining us from Castle Donington and Back o' th' Bank Power Stations, respectively, as Shift Control Engineers. To Ron WHITBY, returning from Staythorpe. Ron was not back long before he left for a trip on one of the Board's colliers, the S.S. 'Captain J.M. DONALDSON'. Altogether he was away for about six days which included his return journey to London. His account of the trip can be read in this issue. Congratulations. To Messrs. H.G. ASTLEY, Chargehand Fitter, and H.G. WELLS, Chargehand Linesman, of the BOURNE Section, who were recently presented with a wrist watch and mantel clock, respectively, under the Long Service Awards Scheme, on completion of 25 years in the Industry. Incidentally both joined the Industry on the same day in 1932. To Mr. L.G. WEBB, Station Chemist, on the publication of his paper "First Aid in the Demineralisation Plant" in the June 1958 edition of "Electricity". Retirement. On Wednesday, 9th July, 1958, "Sid" DOWNES, Assistant Storekeeper, retired. To mark the event a gathering of employees was held in the Workshop and Mr. CAPES (Deputy Station Superintendent) on behalf of all, extended to Sid the very best of wishes for the future. A Retirement Grant (Part) from the Station Welfare Fund, together with the result of a "whip round" well supported, was presented to Sid, who expressed his thanks and appreciation of the sentiments expressed and the gifts presented, in a suitable manner. Obituary. It is with regret that we record the death of Mr. L. BARLOW husband of Mrs. M. BARLOW, our Canteen Attendant, which took place on the 18th July. To Mrs. Barlow and her family we extend our deepest sympathy. |
