The scope
of the
work
of a
MECHANICAL
FITTER

A mechanical fitter in a power station may be concerned with anything from a steam or water turbine to a tap. His job is to overhaul, maintain and repair all the mechanical equipment in and around the power station. He may also have to dismantle or ‘strip down’ electrical equipment for an electrical fitter to work on, and reassemble, or ‘box it up’ afterwards.
Every power station employs fitters. Their numbers depend on the size of the station and the nature of its plant. They may be asked to do any job for which their craft has qualified them, but in practice they tend to concentrate on certain kinds of work. Thus, in some power stations there is a division between those engaged upon planned maintenance and those whose job is repairs. In other stations the division lies between turbine house and boiler house fitters, while elsewhere no division exists at all.
